Ο Andrew Stewart σπούδασε στο Καίμπριτζ και στη British School of Archaeology (Βρετανική Αρχαιολογική Σχολή) στην Αθήνα και στη Ρώμη. Έχει διδάξει στο Καίμπριτζ, στο Otago της Νέας Ζηλανδίας, στο Κολούμπια, καθώς και στο Μπέρκλεϋ, όπου είναι καθηγητής Αρχαίας Μεσογειακής Τέχνης και Αρχαιολογίας και καθηγητής Ελληνικών Σπουδών. Είναι επίσης επιμελητής Μεσογειακής Αρχαιολογίας στο Hearst Museum of Anthropology, μέλος της American School of Classical Studies στην Αθήνα και του Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, και εταίρος της Australian Academy of the Humanities.
