Ο Thomas Lanier “Tennessee” Williams III γεννήθηκε το 1911 στο Κολόμπους του Μισισίπι. Υπήρξε ένας από τους σημαντικότερους αμερικανούς θεατρικούς συγγραφείς, μαζί με το σύγχρονό του, Άρθουρ Μίλλερ. Έζησε για μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα στη Νέα Ορλεάνη, όπου και άλλαξε το όνομά του από την πολιτεία καταγωγής του πατέρα του. Έγραψε ποιήματα, νουβέλες, θεατρικά έργα και παιχνίδια, ιστορίες και μυθιστορήματα. Κέρδισε το βραβείο Πούλιτζερ το 1948 για το Λεωφορείον ο Πόθος και το 1955 για τη Λυσσασμένη γάτα . Τα έργα του έχουν μεταφραστεί σε πάνω από 30 γλώσσες, ενώ αποτελούν ιδιαίτερα δημοφιλείς παραστάσεις σε όλο τον κόσμο. Πέθανε το 1983 στη Νέα Υόρκη.
