Ο Henry Valentine Miller γεννήθηκε το 1891 στη Νέα Υόρκη σε μια μικροαστική οικογένεια γερμανικής καταγωγής. Επηρεασμένος από το έργο του Νίτσε, του Ντοστογιέφσκι, του Γουίτμαν, του Προυστ και του Σπένγκλερ, μόχθησε στα νεανικά του χρόνια μέχρις ότου διαμορφώσει το άμεσο, σχεδόν πάντα αυτοβιογραφικό ύφος του. Σ’ αυτό συνέβαλε η μακρά παραμονή του στην Ευρώπη κατά τη δεκαετία του τριάντα. Στην κρίσιμη αυτή περίοδο ο Μίλλερ προσδιόρισε και βίωσε τον ρηξικέλευθο τρόπο ζωής και την αρχή της απόλαυσης που εμπνέει ολόκληρο το έργο του, ενώ ταυτόχρονα απελευθερώθηκε μέσα του η δημιουργική φλέβα που τροφοδότησε τα σημαντικά του βιβλία. Ο πόλεμος τον ανάγκασε να επιστρέψει στην Αμερική και από τότε έζησε στην Καλιφόρνια. Προκλητικά για τα πουριτανικά ήθη της χώρας, τα βιβλία του έμειναν ανέκδοτα εκεί ώς το 1961.
