Ο Michael Herzfel έκανε σπουδές αρχαιολογίας στο Καίμπριτζ, μεταπτυχιακά στο Μπέρμιγχαμ και διδακτορικό στην κοινωνική ανθρωπολογία στην Οξφόρδη. Δίδαξε στο Vassar College και στο πανεπιστήμιο της Ιντιάνα και συνεργάστηκε με τα πανεπιστήμια του Παρισιού (Ναντέρ), του Μάντσεστερ, της Πάδουα και την École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. Από το 1991 είναι καθηγητής ανθρωπολογίας στο πανεπιστήμιο του Χάρβαρντ. Έχει διατελέσει πρόεδρος του Modern Greek Studies Association και της Society for the Anthropology of Europe, καθώς και διευθυντής του American Ethnologist την περίοδο 1994-1998.
