O Robert Owen γεννήθηκε το 1771 στο Νιούταουν της Ουαλίας. Ήταν επιχειρηματίας, ένας από τους θεμελιωτές του ουτοπικού σοσιαλισμού, γνωστός για τα πρωτοποριακά σχέδια κοινωνικής μεταρρύθμισης και συνεταιριστικής οργάνωσης που εφάρμοσε πειραματικά αλλά με αξιοσημείωτη επιτυχία σε κοινότητες όπως το Νέο Λάναρκ στη Σκοτία και η Νέα Αρμονία στην Ιντιάνα των ΗΠΑ. Πέθανε το 1858.
