Ο Leonard Mlodinow γεννήθηκε το 1954 στο Σικάγο. Έλαβε το διδακτορικό του στη φυσική από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Kαλιφόρνιας στο Μπέρκλεϋ. Υπήρξε ερευνητής στο Ινστιτούτο Τεχνολογίας της Καλιφόρνιας (Caltech), προτού αρχίσει να γράφει επιτυχημένες τηλεοπτικές σειρές στο Χόλυγουντ, όπως το Star Trek: The Next Generation.
