O Geoffrey Ernest Richard Lloyd γεννήθηκε το 1933 στο Λονδίνο. Σπούδασε αρχαιοελληνική φιλολογία και φιλοσοφία στο Καίμπριτζ, υιοθετώντας αργότερα μια ανθρωπολογική και συγκριτική οπτική (μέσω και της μελέτης της κλασικής κινεζικής γραμματείας). Είχε ακόμη περάσει ένα χρόνο στην Αθήνα μαθαίνοντας νέα ελληνικά (καθώς και μπουζούκι). Έγινε καθηγητής και ερευνητής στο Καίμπριτζ, όπου παραμένει επίτιμος εταίρος. Είναι επίσης μέλος της Βρετανικής Ακαδημίας, καθώς και επίτιμο μέλος της Αμερικανικής Ακαδημίας Τεχνών και Επιστημών. Έργα του είναι: Polarity and Analogy.
