Ο Martin Jay γεννήθηκε το 1944 στη Νέα Υόρκη. Σπούδασε στο Union College και στο Harvard. Έχει διδάξει σε πολλά πανεπιστήμια των ΗΠΑ και της Αγγλίας και από το 1982 είναι καθηγητής ιστορίας στο πανεπιστήμιο της Καλιφόρνιας, στο Μπέρκλεϋ. Έχει τιμηθεί με τα βραβεία της American Historical Association (1973), της Academy of Literary Studies (1986) και της American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1996). Συμμετέχει στη συντακτική επιτροπή των επιθεωρήσεων Theory and Society και Cultural Critique.
