Ο Frans de Waal γεννήθηκε στην Ολλανδία το 1948 και από το 1981 ζει στις ΗΠΑ. Έλαβε διδακτορικό στη ζωολογία και την ηθολογία από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Ουτρέχτης και σήμερα διδάσκει ψυχολογία στο Yerkes National Primate Research Center του Πανεπιστημίου Έμορυ, στην Ατλάντα.
