Η Susan E. Alcock γεννήθηκε στη Μασαχουσέτη. Σπούδασε αρχαιολογία και ιστορία στο Γέιλ και στο Καίμπριτζ απ’ όπου έλαβε και το διδακτορικό της. Έγινε καθηγήτρια Κλασικής Αρχαιολογίας και Κλασικών Σπουδών στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Μίσιγκαν και, από το 2006, στο πανεπιστήμιο Brown. Είναι επίσης έφορος στο Μουσείο Αρχαιολογίας Kelsey και διευθύντρια του Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World. Έχει συνδιευθύνει αρχαιολογικά προγράμματα στην Πύλο, στην περιοχή του ποταμού Βόροταν της Αρμενίας και στην Πέτρα. Είναι μέλος της συντακτικής επιτροπής των περιοδικών Journal of Archaeological Research, Journal of Social Archaeology και Archaeological Dialogues.
